Bitcoin Core software update: a “very scary bug” is fixed
Bitcoin Core released an update for their web client. New product version can presumably fix a DoS vulnerability bug. The bug was reported anonymously. They say, it could affect the older Bitcoin Core versions trying to process miners’ block transactions. As a result, a “huge chunk of the Bitcoin network” could crash for 12.5 BTC (about $80 000).
Emin Gün Sirer, co-director of IC3 and computer scientist at Cornell University, states: there are many “motivated people” ready to bring the BTC network down. In fact, a potential attack needs less money than “a lot of entities would pay for a 0-day attack on many systems.”
In his tweet, Cobra Bitcoin, a co-owner of Bitcoin.org, said: it was a “very scary bug.” Luckily, nobody didn’t make use of such an opportunity.
